. >>> thank you for joining us. i'm mike hydeck in for jc hayward today. the man police named the east coast rapist was scheduled to plead guilty in a virginia courtroom but apparently aaron thomas had a change of his mind. so what happened? let's get right to peggy fox live in manassas. what's the deal, peg? >> reporter: well, mike, aaron thomas was expected to plead guilty to two rapes and three counts of abduction with intent to defile. those charges go back to halloween night of 2009 when three teenage girls who were out trick or treating were abducted and two of them were raped. but today in court when the judge asked aaron thomas how he pleaded for the first rape charge, here's what he said. i don't know which is right or which is wrong. i don't know what i'm doing. the commonwealth's attorney says he wasn't surprised that aaron thomas did not plead guilty because of his previous erratic behavior. >> i certainly would not want him to plead guilty if he had any question about whether he should or not. if i'm not convinced that he's willing and -- ready, willing and able t

brown to jail for six days. use his elected office to make personal gains or defraud the people he represented. but fox 5s political analyst mark plotkin believes that some will think the former chairman got off easily. >> i think most people don't think six days is in jail is a strong message. a few months in jail is a strong message. >> reporter: brown's attorney admits the bank fraud and campaign violations were wrong, but believes prosecutors would have never gone after brown if he was not the council chairman. >> he has received a sentence from the court and the court expects he will abide by the sentence. >> reporter: and brown shoulding released to head home in the next hour and that is what we told. brown will serve six months of home detention and wear an ankle bracelet, two years of probation and 4ity hours of community service. the judge said he wants the service to be visible to everyone. he wants it to happen on the weekdays, and he wants people ton this crime did not go unpunished. shawn? >> i'm curious d kwame brown talk at all today, go did he speak to the reporters

chair kwame brown wille u.s. district court judge to learn his fate today. >> he resigned and pleaded guilty to bank fraud charges in june. melanie alnwick is live in northwest d.c. with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. you know, kwame brown actually has two sentencing hearings hearings today. the first in federal court on those bank fraud charged and then the second later this afternoon in d.c. superior court on campaign finance violation charges. now, as you mentioned, brown pleaded guilty in june. after a year-long investigation, the federal charges relate to providing false information on bank loan applications. one of the loan was for a 39- foot boat. brown also forged the signature of a friend on an application and doctored two forms to overstate his income by tens of thousands of dollars. the other charges go back to an audit by d.c.'s office of campaign finance. it found that brown's 2008 election campaign failed to report more than $400,000 in contributions an expenditures and that $239,000 wound up in the hands of a consulting company controlled by brown's brother. kwa

fraud charges. he had forged home loan documents to buy a pleasure boat. he had been using his government office to fax the tony documents. brown was back at federal court tuesday to be formerly sentenced but not before he said he had done wrong because of my own poor conduct. i am not a victim. it was stup. i was wrong. brown's mother and wife left the court without comment. brown was detained to serve one day in custody. his sentence also includes two years supervised release. a form of probation. six months of home detention. a 10:00 p.m. curfew and 480 hours of community service. >> he has received a sentence from the court. the court expects that he will abide by the sentence. that meets all of his term. if the curfew is 10:00, he needs to be in at 10:00 so when they turn it on, it goes ping at his home. >> reporter: prosecutors noted he had taken responsibility for his crime, given up his public office and he was cooperating with prosecutors in their investigations. and judge leon said he wanted kwame brown to do his public service, community service out in the public. he

the crowd. behind us you see the extension for the silver line to metro. this is also part of this camera of gridlock process around the state, especially in northern virginia. this saturday is when the lanes will officially open up as mentioned. four new lands, 14 miles on the vault with from springfield to tyson's corner. the lens will allow the beltway to offer hov connections for the first time. when it is done, buses and car pools will ride these for free. and other -- in any cars with one or two passengers can pay to take them. we spoke to virginia transportation secretary and he says people will get used to paying the additional my. is says is a small amount to pay to get out of gridlock. >> people do not think about the fact of how much money they are losing sitting in those lanes now. what it takes an extra 20, 30 minutes to go from one side of the beltway to the other. this is up with want to provide them the opportunity to say, for a couple extra hours i can get home 30 minutes sooner. can i get to that day care center. can i make that delivery sooner? >> officials here hope th

. >> keep us posted. we turn to a story you will only see on 7 tonight. d.c. police are searching for a group of men. >> this group is wanted for crimes ranging from robbery to rape. jennifer is live in northeast tonight. >> this is extremely scary news. police stepping up their patrols in the targeted neighborhoods. they tell you these suspects are armed and dangerous. [no audio] there are four crimes that began right before midnight on friday. we did speak with one of the victims. [no audio] we are having some technical difficulties. that was an attempted robbery. that led into a robbery of a 27- year-old woman. that went to a double rate, double robbery of two women. the men moved to their fourth victim. they tried to kidnap a 17-year- old girl. also near the capitol heights metro. the men were traveling in a red card -- red car. we have four victims, all women. we will be keeping you posted on this. >> thank you very much. d.c. school officials announced a list of schools that could be closed next school year. this is a major blow to many parents. money is being wasted on too
